Shakira’s new album, ‘Las Mujeres Ya no Lloran’ (Women Don’t Cry Anymore) is released today in stores and on streaming platforms. The Colombian singer is back after seven years, much to the delight of fans. The album features 16 songs, including 12 collaborations with other superstars like Cardi B, Grupo Frontera, Tiësto and fellow Colombian singer from Medellin, Karol G.

The story behind Shakira’s new album

In a recent interview, Shakira disclosed that her extended hiatus from album production was due to her relationship with now-retired FC Barcelona and World Cup football player Gerard Piqué. She revealed that, at one point, she sacrificed her artistic career for the sake of her relationship. The revelation of her ex-husband’s infidelity, with whom she had two sons, reignited the singer’s career, as she turned to music to cope with her emotional turmoil. Thus, the title of her album itself is a testament to her personal journey: women don’t cry anymore over breakups or betrayal, “las mujeres facturan” (women make money).

Her album’s track ‘Ultima’ serves as a final message to Gerard Piqué. Shakira has previously dedicated two songs to her ex-husband, including the diss track ‘Pa tipos como tu’ (‘For guys like you’) a collaboration with Argentinian music producer Bizarrap, and ‘TQG’ with Medellin singer Karol G. Both tracks are featured on the album and achieved worldwide success, reaching the 9th and 7th position on the US Billboard Hot 100 ranking and the 2nd and 1st spots on the Billboard Global 200, respectively.

Shakira, the Colombian star

Born in 1977 in Barranquilla to a Lebanese father born in the US and a Colombian mother, Shakira is the best-selling Colombian singer of all time. She rose to fame in the 2000s with hits like ‘Whenever, Wherever’, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and ‘She Wolf’, recognizable for her unique fusion of Latin Pop, pop and Middle Eastern rhythms and dances, reflecting her Lebanese heritage.

Throughout her career, she has explored various musical styles, including reggaeton, rock and dance, collaborating with global music stars such as US Popstars Rihanna and Beyoncé, Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz, hip hop legend Wyclef Jean, and Colombian superstars Carlos Vives and Maluma.

In “Las Mujeres Ya no Lloran”, fans of Shakira will discover exclusive collaborations with Cardi B and the Mexican regional music group Grupo Frontera.
