Colombia is consolidating as the fourth country in Latin America in terms of fiber optic connectivity, currently reaching 31% of households throughout the national territory. Analysts conclude that this is a key factor for economic and social development in each country.

Fourth country in Latin America

Fiber optic connectivity has accelerated and improved internet access. Colombia ranks fourth in this type of connectivity in the Latin American region. According to data from the Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) for 2021, fiber connection in the main countries of the region increased by 29% compared to the previous year. In numbers, this means that in the 18 countries, 103 million households have fiber. According to this entity, the data is expected to reach 59% of connections by 2026.

Regarding Colombia, the announced 31% means that 4.3 million households have this technology. These figures place the country among the top 5 in growth of this type of connection. Carlos Jérez, external plant coordinator of the technology company GTD Colombia, explains that “fiber optic, known for its ability to transmit data through light pulses, is what allows offering a smooth and uninterrupted browsing experience.”

Opportunities for economic growth

According to GTD Colombia, the Colombian geography hinders linear connectivity to the extent that other countries have achieved, but it emphasizes the need to consolidate fiber optic connection because it is an optimal opportunity for economic growth in the country.

“By providing a solid communication infrastructure, it encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.” It is even necessary for companies to improve their productivity.

In this regard, Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogotá (ETB) has announced that it expects to end this 2023 with 2 million households with fiber optic. According to data provided by ETB itself, the proportion of its customers with fiber optic has increased from 42% in 2019 to 76% in 2023.
