Disney’s iconic characters have brought the holiday spirit to Medellin, Colombia, as over 27,000 dazzling figures lit up Parques del Rio and 40 other locations across the city. The display, inspired by Disney’s centenary, officially started on Thursday at 6:58 p.m., attracting around 10,000 viewers to the western side of the EPM building.

In a public event organized by Empresas Publicas de Medellin (EPM), the Philharmonic Orchestra played Disney tunes before the lights illuminated the EPM building.

“Celebrate a magical Christmas” the message of this Christmas lighting

A drone show, forming a star with the message “Celebrate a magical Christmas” preceded the official lighting. The countdown, supported by drones displaying numbers, ended at exactly 6:58:41 p.m. on Thursday, marking the official start of the Christmas festivities in Medellin. These lights, celebrating 56 years, will shine every night from 6:00 p.m. to midnight until January 8.

Disney figures will take center stage in Parques del Rio and the Medellin River corridor, while other areas will showcase traditional Christmas and the natural wonders of Colombia. The city expects over 8 million visitors, following the 7.5 million in 2022, with an economic impact exceeding 36.9 billion pesos.

Why Disney?

EPM cited the success of the lights inspired by Encanto in 2022, whose intellectual property rights cost 1,383 million pesos plus VAT. The theme aims to replicate the positive response that attracted over 7.5 million people last year, contributing to an economic boost of 36.9 million dollars.

Beyond Medellin, simultaneous Christmas illuminations occurred in Itagui, where Mayor Jose Fernando Escobar inaugurated the festivities at 6:46 p.m. The celebration, themed “The Magic of Christmas,” will extend until January 8 and features an extensive display in key locations in the municipality.

EPM also expanded its program “Let’s Light Up the Joy” to 14 other municipalities, spreading Christmas joy in Taraza, Betulia, Liborina, Arboletes, Caramanta, San Pedro de Uraba, Yolombo, Nechi, Valparaiso, Caracoli, Jerico, Cisneros, Toledo, and Campamento.”
