Amidst a challenging year for Hollywood, characterized by strikes among actors and writers, the film industry has reached a significant juncture with the unveiling of the 96th Academy Awards nominees. The announcement, made by actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid, highlighted ‘Oppenheimer’ with 13 nominations, leading the pack alongside ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.

Diverse Films Compete for Best Picture

The Best Picture category showcases a wide range of narratives. Contenders include ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Poor Things’, ‘Barbie’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘American Fiction’, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, ‘Maestro’, ‘Past Lives’, ‘The Holdovers’, and ‘The Zone of Interest’, reflecting the diverse themes and storytelling of this year’s films.

The Oscars’ global influence is evident with ‘Society of the Snow’ (originally ‘La Sociedad de la Nieve’), a film by Juan Antonio Bayona about Andes plane crash survivors, receiving nods for Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Notable nominees include Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, and Jeffrey Wright for Best Actor, and Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Hüller, Carey Mulligan, and Emma Stone for Best Actress.

In supporting roles, nominations went to Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan Gosling, Mark Ruffalo, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, Jodie Foster, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Directors Justine Triet, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Jonathan Glazer are contenders for Best Director. The screenplay categories feature a mix of new and established writers.

The international film category includes ‘Io Capitano’, ‘Perfect Days’, ‘Society of the Snow’, ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’, and ‘The Zone of Interest’. Animated features in contention are ‘The Boy and the Heron’, ‘Elemental’, ‘Nimona’, ‘Robot Dreams’, and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’.

Documentaries like ‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’, ‘The Eternal Memory’, ‘Four Daughters’, ‘To Kill a Tiger’, and ’20 Days in Mariupol’ received nominations, as did films in the production design, costume design, makeup, and hairstyling categories, including ‘Barbie’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Napoleón’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Poor Things’, and ‘Society of the Snow’.
