The National Police of Colombia, in coordination with the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, arrested an American citizen on Tuesday, April 9th, in the municipality of Sabaneta, a town south of Medellin, for allegedly using a farm to sell marijuana to foreign tourists and promoting “Cannabis Farm Tours” on social media.

Officials from the Criminal Investigation Section went to inspect the place, located on the outskirts of the town. There, it was confirmed that the American offered private cannabis tours inside his property, exclusively to foreigners. Prior reservation was required to attend the tours, two to eight people participated in each one, and adapted spaces with marijuana cultivation nurseries were on the site.

In the report, it was revealed that the 73-year-old man allegedly charged US$30 per person for the tour, which lasted between two and three hours. Attendees learned about the planting, care, harvesting, and maintenance process of the plant. Additionally, the suspect sold harvested marijuana to tour attendees at US$20 per gram. The tour could only be booked through social media and a website.

During the operation, the police seized 1,380 grams of marijuana and some items for its use. The foreigner, who had been selling the tours for over a year and referred to himself as “Cannabis Jimmy”, was apprehended in the act and presented before the Office of the Attorney General for the crimes of drug trafficking and illegal property use.

Since 1986, with Law 30, the possession and consumption of small amounts of cannabis, up to 20 grams, as well as the cultivation of up to 20 plants for personal use, have been legal in Colombia. However, the commercialization of this plant remains illegal. Towards the end of last year, a constitutional reform aimed at establishing a legal cannabis market in Colombia was rejected in Congress.
