NYC Mayor Calls for Immigration Reform at the 2024 Concordia Americas Summit

In response to a question about the current immigration situation in New York City, the mayor explained that any resolution to the crisis requires a national response and a more robust migration strategy, especially concerning the management of the southern border.

As New York City receives between 200 and 1,000 new migrants and asylum seekers daily, Eric Adams urged the federal government to enact immigration reform and provide adequate funding for sanctuary cities to accommodate the inflow of people. The migration crisis continues to be a significant concern in New York City, “with approximately 200,000 asylum seekers and migrants hosted there,” he said. With migrants primarily originating from Venezuela, the upcoming Venezuelan Presidential elections in July have raised concerns, as political instability could trigger a new wave of migration towards the U.S.
