Was the US ambassador to Colombia targeted by a terrorist attack this afternoon? Rumors arose after the Colombian military found an explosive device on a local road prior to the ambassador’s scheduled visit to San Jose del Guaviare, in the Amazon region, where he was set to inaugurate a school.

Through a press release, Colombian National Armed Forces have denied that the explosive device was targeting the US ambassador, nor was any other terrorist attack planned against him.

The military has confirmed that after evaluating the route and the activation time of the device, it was unrelated to the ambassador’s visit. The armed forces believe the device was installed before the diplomat’s visit and targeted army troops.

The device was safely deactivated in a controlled environment, without injury or collateral damage, thanks to the army’s prevention protocols. In the statement, the Colombian military confirmed that all threats of harm directed towards Francisco Palmieri have been dismissed as false, confirming that the integrity and well-being of the American ambassador to Colombia have not been compromised.

The army also stated that the ambassador and his delegation were unable to conduct the ceremony due to bad weather, preventing their arrival via military aircraft.

Who is Francisco Palmieri, US ambassador to Colombia?

Francisco Palmieri is an American diplomat who has held several positions within the US Department of State, including Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, from January 2017 to November 2018.

Palmieri has been the US ambassador to Colombia since June 1, 2022. He was appointed by the Secretary of State Antony Blinken to lead US relations with Colombia. His primary mission in the country is to support the implementation of Colombia’s Peace Agreement.
