Shakira, the Colombian superstar, has been chosen to perform the official anthem of the 2024 Copa America. During a TelevisaUnivision event in New York City, Shakira revealed that her song ‘Punteria’ (Aim) will be the official anthem of the upcoming football competition, marking a new collaboration between the Barranquilla-born singer and the world of sports.

Shakira and Sports, from Super Bowl to Copa America

This is not the first time that a Shakira song has be chosen to headline a sporting event. In 2010, Shakira performed ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’, the official anthem of the South Africa football World Cup. The song became a viral and global hit, turning into one of Shakira’s most sucessful songs. In 2014, for the World Cup in Brazil, Shakira also performed the official song, ‘Dare (La La La)’.

This time, however, Shakira’s song was not specifically created for the sporting event. ‘Punteria’ is a theme from Shakira’s latest album, ‘Las Mujeres Ya no Lloran’ (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), and features the American rapper Cardi B.

More recently, Shakira set the 2020 Super Bowl on fire with her halftime show alongside Jennifer Lopez. During the event, the artist popularized a Colombian dance from the Caribbean Coast, the Champeta, paying tribute to her culture and heritage.

For the second time in history, the Copa America is organized by the United States. From June 20 to July 14, the US will host the sixteen participating teams in venues including some of the most significant stadiums in the country, like the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, AT&T Stadium in Texas, and Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
