An event as unexpected as it was moving marked the beginning of 2026 in Colombia: A woman in Cartagena gave birth inside a taxi while being rushed to a medical center. The case, which quickly became national news, highlighted both the strength of a family and the challenges the health care system still faces in critical moments.
The birth took place on Jan. 1, in the early hours of the year, when Sindy, a young mother, went into labor while heading to a hospital. Unable to receive immediate care at the first medical center she visited, the family decided to continue the trip by taxi to another facility.
However, time was not on their side, and the baby was born during the ride, to the surprise of everyone in the vehicle and of those who later learned about the story.
An unexpected birth in the middle of traffic in Cartagena, Colombia
The taxi was traveling through Cartagena’s neighborhoods of San Francisco and La Esperanza when the contractions intensified. At that moment, Sindy’s mother, Maria Cassiani, played a crucial role: She became an improvised midwife and assisted in the birth of her grandson inside the vehicle. Despite the limited space and the tension of the situation, she acted with calmness and courage.
The baby, named Simon, was born healthy, although with an added complication: The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck at the time of delivery. Thanks to the grandmother’s quick reaction and the support of the taxi driver, the situation was brought under control.
Minutes later, mother and child were taken to a nearby clinic, where they received specialized medical care and were reported to be in good health.
Videos of the moment soon circulated on social media, generating a wave of reactions. Many users praised the family’s strength and the grandmother’s composure, while others expressed concern about the circumstances that led to a birth taking place outside a hospital setting.

Social impact and reflections on health care
Beyond the extraordinary anecdote, the case sparked a broader debate about timely medical attention within the health care system. The family reported that delays in initial care forced them to continue the journey in search of another medical center — a situation that, without the quick response of those involved, could have had a very different and probably unwanted outcome.
For many citizens, Simon’s birth became a symbol of resilience, but also a wake-up call about the need to strengthen emergency protocols, especially during holiday periods such as the beginning of the year, when emergency services often face heavier pressure.
The story also included an unexpected gesture of solidarity. The transportation platform Didi Colombia announced that it will become the newborn’s godparent, a move that was warmly received by the family and added a hopeful note to an already emotional story.
