Since the early morning of Friday, March 15, 2024, the ARC Gloria, the Colombian Navy’s ambassador vessel, has been anchored in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This stop is part of a global tour celebrating the Colombian Navy’s upcoming 200th anniversary. With the aim to promote Colombia worldwide, the vessel is open for public tours and visits from 9 AM to 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday and 9 AM to 3 PM on Monday.
Celebrating the Colombian navy
July 24, 2024, will mark the bicentennial anniversary of the Colombian Navy (Armada de Colombia). The date commemorates the naval battle of Lake Maracaibo, a decisive confrontation in Colombia’s struggle for independence, that saw the nascent Republic of Greater Colombia confront the Spanish Empire. Despite being outnumbered by the Spanish Armada, the young Colombian navy inflicted a severe defeat on the Spaniards, destroying or capturing nearly their entire fleet.
ARC Gloria is Colombia’s ambassador
Constructed in Bilbao, Spain, in 1967, the ARC Gloria is a three-masted barque that serves as both Colombia’s and the Colombian Navy’s ambassador across the globe. According to its captain, Cesar Iregui, the ARC Gloria represents Colombia’s message of peace and friendship to the world, symbolizing the country’s values.
Beyond its symbolic significance, the ARC Gloria also functions as a training vessel for the Colombian navy, currently hosting 73 naval cadets onboard to complete their training as future sailors.
