Mexico will pay Venezuelans who return to their country. This is the result of the agreement signed between Mexico and Venezuela, by which the government of President Lopez Obrador will pay a monthly subsidy of 110 dollars, in US currency, to Venezuelans who are on Mexican soil and decide to return to Venezuela.

Controversy has not been long in coming after the announcement of the signing of this international agreement between both countries, which is part of the “Return to the Homeland” program promoted by the government of Nicolas Maduro to encourage the return of Venezuelan migrants to their country.

Decrease the presence of Venezuelan nationals

The Mexican government explained, through the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Alicia Barcena, that the initiative, which is already being implemented, was signed by Presidents Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Nicolas Maduro. Barcena justified the agreement because, she said, Mexico “cannot sustain the current numbers of migrants of that nationality” in her country.

The way it works is simple: Mexico hands out a card that is recharged monthly with the stipulated amount in U.S. currency. The assistance lasts for a total of six months. At this moment, and taking into account the economic situation and the value of the Venezuelan currency, the dollar yields considerably, so the Mexican government expects a massive response.

“We already have an amount that we are giving to migrants returning to Venezuela. We are giving them a card to join a welfare program and we are making agreements with (Venezuelan and Mexican) companies to receive them and give them jobs”, the official explained.

Promoting job security

In addition, among other services, the agreement establishes that it will facilitate the search for employment in Venezuela for Venezuelan citizens who leave Mexico and return to their country.

“We are sending Venezuelans back to their country because we cannot handle these numbers. To each migrant that we are sending back, we will give support like the one given in Mexico by Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro,” Barcena said.

Among the Venezuelan companies collaborating with the agreement are Polar and PDVSA, and among the Mexican companies also participating are Bimbo and FEMSA. The idea is to offer employment to Venezuelan returnees in order to encourage migration to their country of origin.
