Microsoft has launched an AI Laboratory in Colombia to tackle the urgent need for skilled professionals in the sector. This initiative aims to train more than 1,200 Artificial Intelligence experts within the next three years, and is expected to support businesses throughout the country.

The AI Laboratory will foster a network of students and AI experts in Colombia, linking them with small and medium-sized businesses, organizations, and government bodies. This collaboration aims to match the demand for AI solutions with the supply of skilled professionals. Participants will gain knowledge of AI while addressing market needs, and contributing to the country’s development.

EAFIT University is offering the necessary physical space and infrastructure for the development of AI technologies in Colombia. The university plays a key role in designing study programs, ensuring students actively engage in their learning. Moreover, the AI Laboratory will expand its reach via the Technological Training Center (NODO), applying technology to solve practical challenges.

Employment opportunities in the technology sector

According to an analysis by the Ministry of Information Technology (TIC), by 2025, Colombia will have a shortfall of 68,000 to 112,000 software developers. This demonstrates that, while certain professionals with degrees may not be in demand in the labor market, there is an urgent need for careers related to the digital world.

The project aims to facilitate access to this type of technology for SMEs, comprising over 90% of Colombia’s business landscape. Small organizations benefit from AI solutions tailored to their needs, through a laboratory, driving enterprise growth alongside national prosperity.

Colombian AI Laboratory promotes social equality

The space also seeks to encourage the participation of women, ethnic minorities, and other under-represented groups Through alliances already created in NODO with foundations such as ‘JuanFe’ and ‘Secrets to Tell’ and corporations such as ‘PAN’ and ‘Visible Hands’, the project aims to break down barriers to education and opportunities. In Colombia, various entities are collaborating to promote initiatives aimed at training personnel in new technologies. This collective effort acknowledges the transformative power of digital technology in boosting organizational productivity and success.
