Colombia’s leading tourism authorities forecast a significant surge in cruise tourism in 2024. They expect 214 ship visits from 30 different cruise lines, bringing an estimated 329,226 passengers. This marks a 151% increase in cruise ship arrivals and a 346% rise in passenger numbers compared to the 2022–2023 season. The data suggests that 2024 will be a pivotal year for cruise tourism in Colombia.

ProColombia, the entity in charge of promoting international tourism, foreign direct investment, non-traditional exports, and the country’s brand, estimates a USD 50 million impact on the country’s economy from the cruise industry. Cruise ships from various lines, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America, and others, will dock in Colombia.

Buenaventura, a city on the Pacific coast of Colombia, has welcomed its first tourists of the season. Additionally, cruise ships are set to visit major port cities, including Cartagena and Santa Marta, as well as the previously mentioned Buenaventura.

An Emerald Cruises ship, the Emerald Azzurra, recently docked at Cabo de La Vela, marking a significant moment for La Guajira. This event is unprecedented in the region, often overlooked by the rest of Colombia. Cabo de La Vela, the northernmost point of the country, is a unique location where the La Guajira desert meets the sea.

What is Colombia’s strategy to incentivize tourism?

German Umaña, Colombia’s minister of trade, industry, and tourism, said that “La Guajira region has a high potential for tourism activity, thanks to its natural landscapes.” ProColombia management actively embraces the national government’s and President Gustavo Petro’s directive to enhance and broaden tourism across the regions.

The strategy of promoting non-traditional destinations within Colombia is spearheaded by ProColombia. This initiative aims to highlight these lesser-known areas as hidden gems with the potential to enchant tourists and deepen their love for the country.

ProColombia actively implements its revamped eco-tourism strategy. The strategy consists of allowing tourists from all over the world to enjoy Colombia’s remarkable eco-diversity of flora and fauna.
