The 2014 edition of Colombia’s renowned half marathon, ‘Corre Mi Tierra’ (Run My Land) kicks off this Sunday, April 21, in Medellin. Established in 2011, Corre Mi Tierra has become one of the largest road running events in Colombia. This year, in addition to Medellin, the Corre Mi Tierra half marathon will also take place in Barranquilla on June 16 and in Bogota on November 17. While the main race covers a half marathon distance of 21km (13 miles), Corre Mi Tierra also offers shorter race options, including 15km, 5km, and even 2km for amateurs eager to participate in this event, which is 100 percent made in Colombia.

Originating in Medellin, this event quickly expanded to other major Colombian cities, including Cali in 2015, Barranquilla in 2016, and Bogota in 2023. Over 16,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Corre Mi Tierra race this Sunday, and those interested can still register on the event’s website. The organization goes beyond just hosting the event by offering free training programs in advance to prepare participants.

Along the route, runners will find hydration stations, medical support, and music, all designed to ensure their safety and comfort. The event also represents a significant economic opportunity: in 2023, the half marathon generated approximately US$5 million (20 billion COP) and created 4,000 direct and indirect jobs in Medellin, Cali, and Bogota.

Sports in Colombia

There is a strong culture of fitness and sports in Colombia. Activities like road running, hiking, and cycling are immensely popular, with major cities like Bogota and Medellin standing out for their extensive offerings in terms of clubs, associations, and public infrastructure. For instance, Medellin is the birthplace of one of Latin America’s largest fitness chains, Action Black, which has expanded to the United States and plans further global expansion this year.
