After more than 200 days since their kidnapping, Colombia has joined a list of 20 countries that have called for Hamas to release the hostages in their power. These Israeli hostages have been held by Hamas during the siege of the Gaza Strip since the October 7 attack on Israel.

What does the request signed by Colombia say regarding the hostages held by Hamas?

The official document signed by 20 countries (including Colombia) states: “We call for an immediate release of all the hostages held by Hamas that remain kidnapped and hidden away in the Gaza Strip. They have been in the terrorist group’s power for more than 200 days since their initial kidnapping on October 7, 2023.”

Continuing with the statement, the signing countries have also emphasized the urgent need for an agreement that effects the release of all the hostages and an immediate and prolonged cease-fire. They claim that an immediate release will facilitate humanitarian assistance and the end of hostilities in the region.

The statement signed by Colombia says that “Palestinians will be able to return to their lands and homes if secure refuge and provisions are guaranteed.” The goal remains for there to be an immediate release of hostages held by Hamas, whilst being sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. It further states that “We (the signing countries) vehemently support the mediation efforts to bring our citizens home.”

Elkana Bohbot is a Colombian citizen who is still captured by Hamas. He gained Colombian citizenship because his wife, Geraldyn Gonzalez, is Colombian, and the decision to sign was made to facilitate his liberation.

Finally, the statement declares: “We reiterate our call for Hamas to free the hostages and allow for this crisis to end. We should focus on bringing peace and calmness to the region.” Colombia as a signing country of this document has subscribed to every single one of these words.

What other countries signed the request with Colombia?

Besides Colombia, the signatories include Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. The request was led by the United States.
