Colombia has made its first shipment of sugar mango to the United States via a maritime route. The cargo departed from Santa Marta and is bound for the Port of Savannah, Georgia, marking a significant moment in the country’s agro-export industry and the foreign trade of this fruit.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jhenifer Mojica, highlighted the joint efforts between the ministry and the Colombian Agricultural Institute, ICA, to support the entire process from cultivation to commercialization. “This success demonstrates the commitment of President Gustavo Petro’s government to support Colombian agricultural producers and companies, opening up new business opportunities in international markets.

The exported fruit was grown on Las Margaritas and Mi Cabanita farms, located in Magdalena. Both are registered with the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA). Similarly, the packing plant and the exporting company are duly authorized and have demonstrated a commitment to quality and international standards.

Prospects for Colombian global mango export soar with US entry

This achievement for the country is part of the objectives of the ICA’s Strategic Plan known as ‘Closer to the Countryside’ and represents an important opportunity for sugar mango producers in Magdalena and the Caribbean region. It also allows the US market to consider other Colombian agricultural products.

“It is expected that this will be the first of many shipments of sugar mango via maritime route, joining exports to the European Union and Middle Eastern countries, consolidating Colombia as an important player in the global market,” Minister Mojica said.

The exporting company is C.I. Tropico Produce S.A.S., headquartered at Finca Kalaluna Parcelacion Los Bucaros in the city of Jerico, Antioquia. The purchase was made from farms located in Cienaga, Magdalena, owned by the renowned entrepreneur Carlos Padilla Peña.

The Ministry of Agriculture explained that during 2023, a total of 211,824 kilograms of sugar mango were exported by air. And already, between January and April of this year, 105,809 kilograms of this fruit have been exported.
