The ARC Gloria continues its journey in the Mediterranean and has now anchored in the port of Marseille, France. Arriving this Sunday, the Colombian ship will remain there until Wednesday before continuing its tour through European ports.
The ARC Gloria is the flagship and ambassador of the Colombian Navy. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the institution, the ARC Gloria is touring Atlantic, Baltic, and Mediterranean ports. Its journey began in March, with a first stop in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.
ARC Gloria is in Marseille
The welcoming ceremony for the ship took place in the presence of Alfonso Prada, the Colombian ambassador to France, and Vice Admiral Harry Ernesto Reyna Niño, along with many members of the Colombian diaspora in France.
The ARC Gloria’s passage through Marseille coincides with the arrival of the Olympic flame in France. For the 2024 Olympic Games, the Belem, one of the oldest three-masted barques in the world, will bring the Olympic flame from Greece to Marseille this Wednesday. The Colombian ship plans to hoist a sail in honor of the Paris Olympic Games and will allow visitors to board the ship from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
During its first stop in the port of Baltimore, the ARC Gloria attracted nearly 14,000 visitors and is expected to meet similar success in the southern French city.
The ARC Gloria was constructed in Bilbao, Spain, in 1967. Beyond its symbolic function, the ARC Gloria also serves as a training vessel for future officers of the Naval School of Cadets ‘Almirante Padilla’ in Cartagena de Indias.
The ship’s itinerary
After Marseille, the ARC Gloria will head to Barcelona and continue its route through Europe until July, visiting North Sea and Baltic ports, before concluding its journey in London, UK.
