Colombian artists continue to lead different stages worldwide. This time, singers Shakira and Karol G stood out at the Met Gala held on March 6 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This year’s version had the theme ‘Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion’ and marks the first edition in which the singers participated.

With striking dresses, the most important designers globally expressed their imagination on world-renowned celebrities. For this occasion, Shakira chose to wear a dress by Venezuelan designer Carolina Herrera, opting for the brand’s characteristic red color in a dress made of airy fabric with an enormous train, complemented by silver jewelry.

Throughout her successful career, the singer from Barranquilla has contributed to the solid presence of the Latin community in international industries. Shakira referred to the representation of this community at events of this caliber to The Hollywood Reporter, explaining, “When I first started it was so hard, there wasn’t a real receptivity to Latin music. (…) Now people decide and so many doors have opened for us Latinos.”

Colombian Karol G’s fairytale debut at the Met Gala

On the other hand, reggaeton artist Karol G, who was awarded Woman of the Year 2024 by Billboard, attended the event wearing a Marc Jacobs nude-colored dress adorned with dozens of diamonds, evoking an aura of fantasy. The singer wore prosthetics to make her ears resemble those of a fairy and wore jewelry characteristic of this kind of mythical creature.

The Colombian singer, winner of 6 Latin American Music Awards last month, was photographed on that day leaving The Mark Hotel, covered up from head to toe, to maintain expectations and surprise with her look.

The gala is a fundraiser dedicated to New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, formally named The Anna Wintour Costume Center.  The event aims to support exhibitions, educational programs, and conservation of the Institute as well as to help finance new acquisitions and activities that promote art and fashion.

The benefit was founded in 1948 by publicist Eleanor Lambert to encourage donations from New York’s high society. This year’s edition included participation from other important Latino artists such as Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Cardi B.
