One of the leaders of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua has been arrested in Colombia. Juan Antonio Gil Diaz, also known as ‘Toño’, was captured by Colombian authorities on his property in the Cundinamarca department, along with bodyguards and collaborators.

The Venezuelan drug lord was one of the main arms providers for the Tren de Aragua gang and a significant cocaine exporter from Colombia and Venezuela to Europe. Wanted by the Colombian authorities, Gil Diaz was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.

Toño was an important collaborator of Tren de Aragua gang

Alias Toño was an ‘invisible narco’, organizing drug trafficking and money laundering through illegal but also legal entities, notably investing drug money into legal businesses in Colombia.

Investigations against the drug lord began in 2023 following the seizure of eight tons of cocaine in French Guiana and the dismantling of two drug labs in Venezuela, all linked to him.

Alias Toño drew the attention of authorities with his lavish lifestyle. Notably, the drug lord was building a rural property reminiscent of Pablo Escobar’s Hacienda Napoles, where he kept Colombian Paso Fino horses and a hundred head of cattle.

He is one of the main collaborators of Hector Guerrero, alias ‘Niño Guerrero’, the founder and leader of the Tren de Aragua gang. The organization was founded in the Penitentiary Center of Aragua, Venezuela, and quickly expanded in Latin America and even to the U.S. through Venezuela migration. The leader of the gang is currently on the run after a police operation on the Penitentiary Center.
