Colombia faces health challenges with rising ultra-processed food consumption, urging action from all sectors.

The consumption of ultra-processed foods continues to adversely affect the health of Colombians, raising concerns among health professionals and policymakers. A recent study highlights the growing trend and its implications, signaling a call to action for both public and private sectors to address the issue comprehensively.

Increasing health risks linked to processed food

According to a study done by Sapien Labs in 2023, the mental function of young people has been harmed as a result of eating ultra-processed meals. Thus, experts are advocating for their regulation from an early age to minimize potential detrimental impacts on young people’s brains.

Research indicates a stark correlation between the rise in consumption of ultra-processed foods and the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases among the Colombian population. These findings, derived from data collected over the past decade, highlight the urgent need for intervention to reverse these worrying health trends.

The investigation points out that ultra-processed foods, high in sugars, fats, and artificial additives, have become more accessible and prevalent in the Colombian diet. This shift is attributed to global market dynamics and local economic factors, which have made these products more appealing to consumers across diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Based on the study, 53% of the 292,786 respondents who eat ultra-processed meals many times per day are anxious or otherwise dealing with concerns about their mental health, compared to 18% who consume them rarely or never.

Efforts to combat the trend

In response to these findings, Colombia is witnessing a concerted effort from various stakeholders aiming to curb the consumption of ultra-processed foods. Governmental health agencies are at the forefront, proposing new regulations and policies designed to encourage healthier eating habits. Among the proposed measures are stricter labeling requirements, taxes on sugary drinks, and educational campaigns targeting both children and adults.

There is a growing movement within the community and non-profit sectors to promote awareness about the benefits of whole foods and traditional Colombian diets. These initiatives are gaining traction, advocating for a return to more natural food choices and the preservation of culinary heritage as a counterbalance to the proliferation of processed foods.
