The thrilling Latin American gastronomic scene has once again propelled Colombia to the top, with Bogotá’s El Chato ranking as the second-best restaurant on the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.

In this culinary celebration, Colombia showcased its diversity and culinary richness through emblematic names such as El Chato, Leo, Humo Negro, Celele, and X.O. These restaurants, passionate about disseminating the country’s native flavors, have managed to keep Colombian culinary traditions alive, a heritage that delights and surprises globally.

El Chato, a well-deserved second place

El Chato, located in Bogota and led by the renowned chef Alvaro Clavijo, secured the prestigious second place on this coveted gastronomic list. In the previous year’s list, this restaurant had already made fifth place, but this time it had climbed nearly to the top, demonstrating constant evolution and unprecedented culinary excellence.

Behind El Chato, other renowned establishments stand tall such as Don Julio from Argentina, A Casa do Porco from São Paulo, Brazil, and Fauna from Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico. This recognition underscores the quality and diversity of Latin American gastronomy, a tapestry rich in flavors, innovation, and culinary culture.

Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants

The selection of the 50 best restaurants in the region was carried out by a select panel of 300 anonymous judges, composed of chefs, food critics, and haute cuisine enthusiasts. Each of them selected ten establishments where they had enjoyed memorable culinary experiences, all located outside their sphere of influence.

As part of this culinary celebration, several awards were presented, including the recognition for the Best Female Chef in Latin America, awarded to Janaína Torres Rueda from A Casa do Porco in São Paulo, Brazil.

El Chato is not only a culinary oasis in Bogotá, but also a standard-bearer proudly flying the flag of Colombian cuisine worldwide. This achievement not only celebrates the skill and creativity of the team behind the restaurant but also positions Colombia at the forefront of the international culinary scene, inviting everyone to discover the unique flavors that emerge from this land of contrasts and exquisite gastronomy.
