On March 23, 2024, at 8:30 PM, Colombia and Colombians are invited to participate in Earth Hour, a planet-friendly event created to raise awareness about energy saving. Launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature, Earth Hour involves disconnecting all electric devises in homes and cities worldwide. The event first started in Sidney in 2007 and quickly gained popularity around the globe, becoming both an individual and collective effort to embrace planet-friendly behaviors.

For this year’s edition, WWF Colombia has prepared several activities to incentivize Colombians to participate in the event. Let’s discover them!

Celebrating nature during Earth Hour Colombia

Earth Hour is an initiative created to protect the planet, but also to celebrate it! Colombia, being the second most biodiverse country in the world, is a perfect host for such an event. Home to approximately 10% of the planet’s biodiversity, including the highest numbers of bird and butterfly species, Colombia is itself a natural wonder.

On Saturday, March 23, Colombians are invited to share their best pictures of nature in Colombia. With the country’s marvelous landscapes, from the Caribbean Coast and the Amazon to the Andean region, participants should find this an amazing challenge.

Additionally, to honor Colombia’s fauna, a more challenging activity is proposed : Colombians are invited to select their favorite animal and craft an origami representation of it.

For those willing to show their commitment to environmental preservation in a more casual way, dressing in green on March 23 will symbolize solidarity with nature and will serve as the rallying symbol of planet and nature lovers.

Earth Hour and good behaviors

Earth Hour is not only about energy saving, it is also about taking care of the environment and adapting a more conscious, responsible lifestyle.

With this in mind, WWF Colombia is challenging every Colombian home cook : prepare a meal in less than 60 minutes, using food that is close to expiring or that you were considering discarding.

Finally, participants in Earth Hour are encouraged to avoid single-use plastics, as these are very damaging to biodiversity, especially sea life and birds.

Now that you are informed, we hope that you are prepared to take part in Earth Hour 2024 !
