The town of Guatape in Colombia has been recognised as one of the most beautiful in the world by Time Out magazine, establishing itself as an important destination for the country.

In the charming, picturesque town of Guatape, in Antioquia, beauty is seen everywhere in its sprawling green landscapes, vibrant colors and decorative architecture, while its joyful atmosphere captivates visitors from all over the world.

“This international recognition not only highlights the architectural beauty of Guatapé, but also the cultural and natural wealth, making us an essential destination for those seeking a unique and enriching experience. With the support of international media, Guatapé continues to establish itself as a dream destination that leaves a lasting impression on all those who have the privilege of visiting it,” said Guatapé mayor’s office, as reported by El Espectador.

Guatape’s selection highlights positive trend for Colombia’s tourism

Colombia was the only South American country on the list, which may be indicative of the growing popularity of the nation as a whole with travelers, and not just that of Guatape.

“It is a significant recognition that highlights the incomparable diversity of Colombia. Destinations like Guatapé are vital to show the world the best of our country, consolidating us as a world-class tourist destination. This recognition reinforces our commitment to promoting authentic and memorable experiences, inviting travelers to discover the cultural and natural wealth that Colombia, the country of beauty, has,” Carmen Caballero, president of Procolombia, Colombia’s tourism board, told El Espectador.

Guatape is characterized by cobblestone streets and brightly colored homes, with decorative baseboards that are built into the structure of buildings and depict everything from local life to exotic flora and fauna. In addition, the town’s proximity to the Penol-Guatape reservoir means a wide variety of water activities are on offer, as well as surrounding forests providing the opportunity for exciting hikes, mountain biking and horeback riding.

The Penon de Guatape, known as the ‘Stone of Penol‘, is an imposing stone monument 220 meters high, located between the municipalities of Guatape and El Penol, which offers a unique experience to visitors who are willing to climb the 702 steps that lead to the summit. From there, a wide panorama is afforded, and climbers can drink in the view of lush green lands and serene waters below.
