Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal secured third place in the general classification of the prestigious Volta a Catalunya, a stage race traversing the Spanish region of Catalonia. After a week of racing, Bernal climbed onto the podium, having finished 5 minutes and 3 seconds behind the competition’s winner, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, the world’s number one in the UCI men’s road racing world ranking. At 27 years old, Egan Bernal is a global cycling star, having won the prestigious Tour de France in 2019 and the Giro d’Italia in 2021.

Volta a Catalunya podium

While he was ranked ninth in the general classification at the end of the fifth stage, Egan Bernal managed to secure a spot on the podium during the sixth stage. Spanning 154.7km, the stage took place in the Pyrenees mountains, offering a terrain particularly suited to the Colombian cyclist. The young rider thus managed to finish second in the stage, appearing on the podium in third place, behind Tadej Pogacar and Spanish cyclist Mikel Landa.

Established in 1911, Volta a Catalunya is the oldest cycling race in the world after the Tour de France, the Tour of Belgium and Giro d’Italia.

Egan Bernal, the Colombian cycling wonder

Born on January 13, 1997, in the city of Zipaquira, Cundinamarca department, Egan Bernal is one of the leading figures of Colombian cycling. At only 27, he has an impressive professional record, including winning the 2018 Colombian National Road Race Championships, the 2018 Tour of California and the 2019 Paris-Nice. Most notably, Egan Bernal became the first Latin American to win the Tour de France, in 2019, at the age of 22. In 2021, he secured another grand tour victory at the Hiro d’Italia, replicating that of his compatriot Nairo Quintana.

Egan Bernal, who is one the highest-paid cyclists in the world, currently competes for the Ineos Grenadiers, a top British cycling team, alongside renowned cyclists Geraint Thomas, Tom Pidcock and Michal Kwiatkowski.
