Alias “Karol G,” believed to be a hitman for the Clan del Golfo, was apprehended on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, by Colombia’s National Police in Barranco de Loba, a municipality in the southern part of Bolívar Department. The suspect, whose real name is Everson Perez Gomez, is 38 years old and is accused by authorities of committing at least 11 homicides.

During the police operation, Gomez, who was riding a motorcycle, was asked to show his identification documents. Officers found a Beretta pistol, two magazines, 13 nine-millimeter cartridges, two portable communication radios, three radio magazines, and a cell phone on him, as reported by the National Police.

In addition to facing charges for the homicides, Gomez is under investigation for three cases of conspiracy to commit crimes, two cases of theft, one case of drug trafficking, one case of illegal firearm possession, and one case of domestic violence.

Alias ‘Karol G’ operated in Clan del Golfo’s criminal substructures

Authorities claim that the arrested individual is linked to the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, serving as the leader of the Edwin Jose Sierra front within the criminal organization known as Clan del Golfo. This group generates revenue through illegal gold mining, extortion, and cocaine trafficking in the southern region of Bolivar Department, on the Caribbean coast.

Alias “Karol G” has purportedly held a leadership position within this criminal structure for seven years, mainly operating in municipalities such as Barranco de Loba, San Martin de Loba, and Altos del Rosario. “This individual has also served as a zone commander in Palmitos and Corozal in the Sucre department. Furthermore, he was a zone commander of the substructure of Nicolas Antonio Uranio Reyes in the municipality of Arjona. Currently, he is subject to an arrest warrant for aggravated conspiracy to commit crimes,” the institution explained.

Why was the Colombian suspect nicknamed Karol G?

Investigators intercepted the detainee’s cellphone and discovered that he frequently listened to music by the Colombian reggaeton singer Karol G. This is why his associates nicknamed him “Karol G,” using it as a ploy to mislead authorities about the gender of the criminal leader. The man was handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, and it is expected that in the coming days, a judge of the Republic will assess his legal situation.
